Mollye Rose-Williams- My work  melds dance, physical theater, and circus, and draws heavily on a childhood playing sports and practicing Chinese acrobatics. I'm particularly drawn to the magic of immersive storytelling that uses multiple modes of expression—physical, verbal, aural—to open doorways to surprise, nuance, and delight. I aim to make work that is physically rigorous, emotionally acute, and deeply human. I have performed on stages throughout the US, Mexico, Canada, and Belgium. I often collaborate with my twin sister, Aviva Rose-Williams, as part of Split Second, and have also collaborated extensively with Galen Rogers, Ky Frances, Charlie Brown, Sarah Young, and others. Important mentors in my work have included Andrea Olsen, Charlie Varon, Nancy Stark Smith, Nina Haft, and Randee Paufve.

Katherine Kain: assistant director Hatchery
Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Katherine Kain (she/they) is a choreographer and dancer based in western Massachusetts. She grew up dancing at South Valley Creative Dance and received subsequent training from Repertory Dance Theatre and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. They have also trained extensively at Bates Dance Festival, Salt Dance Fest, FRESH Festival, and the Practicing Presence Festival. Katherine’s work has been presented at the American College Dance Association conference, the Josten Library for the Performing Arts, and the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought. They have performed in works by Paul Matteson, Dante Brown, and Doug Varone. Most recently, she was dancing with Shakia “The Key” Barron and Barbie Diewald in their project, “Concourse,” which has been in residence at Jacob’s Pillow, High Street Studios, MAGMA, and Bates Dance Festival. Katherine graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Dance from Mount Holyoke College. They also spent this past year developing their teaching practice at The Children’s Ballet and Movement Co. and are excited to join the faculty at SCDT this spring

HATCHERY PIT BAND

is HATCHERY’s Sound, Music & Video focused program. It is a working playground where young artists (11-18) of all skill levels work in creative collaboration with dancers, choreographers, and visiting artists. Musicians craft music and sound together as a live band. In a process similar to scoring music for film, they workshop original sound accompaniments for HATCHERY dance pieces through improvisational explorations on a variety of acoustic and electronic instruments, accommodating both traditional and nontraditional approaches. They also build selections of musical material to showcase their interests and creative voices, interpret songs and jazz standards, and work creatively with sound in live and recorded environments. Students are exposed to audio engineering skills (mixing live sound, effect processing, and basic recording) and philosophies of expressive artmaking and live performing, with a focus on the collaborative skills and flexibility to adapt to what each moment brings. Video works are also explored, adding a dynamic visual element to performance pieces with projected video and incorporating the elements of film scoring.

ABOUT HATCHERY:
We are a company of 23 pre-professional performing artists, joining together to create performance art for all ages and inspire our communities!

Hatchery is more than a company, it’s a family and a safe, dynamic environment where teens experience what it’s like to be part of an inclusive performing arts community.
SCDT’s Hatchery Dance Company is an experimental movement based performance company for young artists ages 13-18. Unique in the Pioneer Valley, Hatchery offers training in contemporary dance forms such as Modern, Improvisation, Contemporary Ballet, African Diaspora forms, Composition and Dance Production. Hatchery offers opportunities for teens to work closely with internationally acclaimed guest artists to create choreographic works or simply to take class.

Hatchery is a good fit for you if you love to dance, move, create, and perform in a non-traditional and non-competitive environment.
Hatchery accommodates young artists at a range of levels, where creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm is central, and company members become articulate, dynamic and skilled performers and directors. Hatchery’s training program aims to cultivate personal artistic growth, while striving for excellence in the arts. Under the direction of Jennifer Polins and Kate Martel, Hatchery members receive mentorship from experts in the field to create dynamic, inspiring performances for the Pioneer Valley and beyond.

Hatchery performs biannually, has shared work at Jacob’s Pillow, and partners with several youth companies including One Earth Dance/Drum Co (Amherst, MA), First Generation (Holyoke, MA), and Portland Youth Dance(Portland, ME).

Hatchery was founded in 2015, in recognition of the need to provide intermediate and advanced level young dancers and performance artists with opportunity for performance without competition. Teen artists are offered opportunities in diverse styles of dance and performance art that challenge their abilities, while inviting their own creative process to emerge. It is our commitment to recognize that each young artist brings their own unique artistic integrity to the company. Each artist not only feels valued, but is valued.

Ever wonder what it's like to be in Hatchery?
