ADULT PROGRAM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS - Winter/Spring 2024
ADULT MODERN ALL LEVELS
Mondays, 6:30-8:00pm Eastern Time
This open level Modern is a gentle movement class open to all; absolute beginners welcome. Drawing from traditional and contemporary forms, we will warm ourselves and practice full, unapologetic embodiment. Class will include phrasework, improvisation, and follow-along exercises to help us cultivate buoyant, adaptive bodies. We will sweat, stretch, and condition.

ADULT OPEN CONTEMPORARY BALLET (open level)
Wednesdays, 9-10:30am and Saturdays, 10-11:30am
Students will be invited into contemporary approaches to ballet techniques that include kindness, rigor, coordination, curiosity, and specificity. Together, we will deepen physical exploration and expand knowledge of movement vocabulary. In these classes, dancers will learn and increase familiarity with ballet terminology, and apply anatomical information for maximized freedom within form, function, and joy.
Experiential and Somatic approach to Ballet.
Open to all levels who want to train together in a supportive environment. This program is for anyone who loves ballet, especially the people whom ballet has left out. Reimagine the standard components of a ballet class and prioritize joy, generosity, play, mutual admiration, and virtuosity.

COUNTERTECHNIQUE
Sundays, 2-3:45pm with Maya Laliberte
In Countertechnique classes, dancers are introduced step-by-step to the various tools – making sure, however, that the priority always lies with experiencing and enjoying the difference in moving, rather than first having to understand the tools intellectually. Classes are therefore very accessible, and can be taught to participants of all levels. Dancers are encouraged to be pro-active in discovering connections and solutions, to be less concerned with judging themselves and to work in a healthy way with regard to body and mind. Throughout the process dancers increasingly become their own teachers, allowing them to practice and progress even at times when a teacher is not available!

SWEATY SOMATIC SUNDAY SANGA
Sundays, 4-5:30pm with VANESSA ANSPAUGH
With a mindful somatic-based inquiry into our still and moving bodies we will move, meditate, sweat and play in motion and in stillness in a supportive, non-judgmental community class container. Each class will consist of a follow along warm-up and will progress into structured improvisational practices and scores. Components of modern dance technique, yoga, ballet, alexander technique, BMC, Bartenieff fundamentals, improvisation, aerobics, authentic movement practice, absurdity and fun will be had. Bringing the outside in and the inside out, together we explore with the various understandings of the present moment and embodied presence through connecting with our individual and collective bodies. We will look to the sensorial, relational, personal, political, seasonal, annual etc. to uncover the layers of what constitutes "this moment" and how our bodies are holding and expressing through our time. This is an open level class and is intended to be a safe space for people of all backgrounds, bodies and gender expressions, to engage in a consistent community of humans moving together in a satisfying and connected way.

MATH CLASS
Sundays, 4-5:30pm with Sara Smith Sundays 10-11 at Sun Studios. Feb 4-March 10 (no class March 3)
Micro-Attentional Techniques for Humans (aka “MATH class")
Bring your curiosity to this series of movement study/practice sessions focused on subtle techniques of attention and transformation that affect our dancing bodies and our entangled relationships. Topics will include sensory perception, respiration, proprioception, ecological-social attunement, and other quiet-but-influential processes that can support, deepen, and sustain our bigger dancing times. Sessions will include introductions to current scientific understanding of physiological systems and structures, as well as improvisation prompts for physical exploration, directed movement exercises, and group discussion. All are welcome.

SCDT Contact Improvisation Spring Series
Wednesdays, 6-8pm with Sarah Konner, Jen Polins and Gabrielle Revlock March 13- May 1
SIGN UP FOR THE SERIES or DROP IN, at our new location- BOMBYX CENTER FOR ARTS AND EQUITY 130 Pine Street, Florence MA!
We offer a space for dancers, choreographers, movers and curious playful humans to join us in practical physical studies and improvisational structures in the practice of contact improvisation. In conversation with Steve Paxton 2022: “The proposal began from the questions, what happens when there are two followers and no leaders?” and a quote from Danny Lepkoff in 2003: “Contact Improvisation is a duet dance form that creates a frame for observing the functioning of the body’s reflexes and our innate abilities to respond to the unusual physical circumstances of the touch of a partner and the floor on any surface of the body.” Our shared practice will build agency and safety while expanding our capacities for imaginative experimentation in improvisation and choreographic process.
Open to all who want to train together in a supportive environment.
