ABOUT US
Since 2014, SCDT has grown from a small artist-run organization presenting a handful of events annually to a vibrant, cutting-edge nonprofit interdisciplinary arts organization. We are now creating new programming to respond to current COVID- and culturally-related challenges and demands. Prior to the pandemic, SCDT was on a steady trajectory towards a sustainable budget; since Spring 2020, we have kept our part-time employees and a presence online with most programming, although our income has diminished by about 50%. We have taken the opportunity to restructure, and cut expenses by moving to a more supportive building location that is dedicated to keeping low-cost space for artists available. We are working as a collaborative team with our sister organization A.P.E. on diversifying programming and sharing resources.

We are now a more nimble, versatile organization, ready to serve our communities and spotlight process based work in more powerful pertinent ways.

Diversity and Inclusion
SCDT's mission is to welcome individuals regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, class and ability. We do not turn anyone away for lack of funds and offer scholarships and programing that expand curation and access to underserved communities. We partner with organizations that work for diverse communities and engage an array of teaching artists, who represent the student body we aim to support. We also offer BIPOC waivers for all events, and offer scholarships, work study, and internships.

SCDT’s collaborative partnerships are essential to the mission of diversity. Hatchery partners with The Performance Project of Holyoke, MA. Young artists from different cultures work together to create and collaborate. Hatchery engages guest choreographers from diverse backgrounds including Vanessa Anspaugh, Lauren Horn, Jasmine Hearn, Shakia Johnson, and Sade Murray, most recently.

SCDT prioritizes and is committed to programs that support the needs of independent artists at every stage in their careers and their creative processes, from research and development to production. SCDT staff is composed of working artists who support creators in their art-making, and connect the public, university communities, and local and regional organizations.
