HATCHERY PIT BAND is HATCHERY’s Sound, Music & Video focused program.  It’s a working playground where young musician artists (11-18) of all skill levels work in collaboration and showcase their creative voices and interests.  With an emphasis on playing and free expression, the band explores songwriting and improvisation utilizing a variety of instruments and styles.  Students are encouraged to play their own instruments, as well as to explore other sounds and avenues of musical expression to suit the creative needs of each piece.  Students are exposed to audio engineering theory and practices (mixing, effect processing, and recording) and philosophies of expressive artmaking and live performing, with a focus on developing the collaborative skills and flexibility to adapt to what each moment brings.

Throughout the semester,  Pit Band students develop musical ideas into selections and recordings of material in a collaborative band setting, while also creating sound scores for Hatchery’s dance works in collaboration with choreographers and visiting artists.  Hatchery’s dancers and the Pit Band develop these pieces in tandem over the semester into an end of the semester showcase performance, where the band performs live accompaniment.  Video works may also be explored, adding a dynamic visual element to performance pieces.

Hatchery’s training program aims to cultivate personal artistic growth, while striving for excellence in the arts. Under the direction of Jennifer Polins and Kate Martel, and music director Tyler Gorman, Hatchery members receive mentorship from experts in the field to create dynamic, inspiring performances for the Pioneer Valley and beyond.

Hatchery was founded in 2015, in recognition of the need to provide intermediate and advanced level young dancers and performance artists with opportunity for performance without competition. Teen artists are offered opportunities in diverse styles of dance and performance art that challenge their abilities, while inviting their own creative process to emerge. It is our commitment to recognize that each young artist brings their own unique artistic integrity to the company. Each artist not only feels valued, but is valued.
