MAKING THINGS / MAKING MORE THINGS
This movement class consists of a Modern Dance warm up followed by a choreography lab. During our choreography lab, we will focus on using objects and costumes as duet partners and source material. We will experiment with various choreographic methodologies, both uncovering themes through physical research and allowing predetermined concepts to drive choreographic inquiry.

SOFIA ENGELMAN
Sofia Engelman is a dance artist based in Massachusetts. Sofia has presented works, including ongoing High Maintenance studies and collaborations with partner Em Papineau, at venues such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (DC), Institute for Contemporary Art/Boston (MA), Movement Research at the Judson Church (NY), FRESH Festival (CA), EstroGenius at the Kraine Theater (NY), and HUT at the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought (MA). Sofia and Em have developed dances, including Where the air is light and clear (2018) and INSTANT SAVIORS (2019), through residencies at The Living Room (ME) and Ponderosa (Germany). Sofia received a BA with highest honors in Dance from Smith College, where she was the recipient of an Excellence in Dance Studies award, and, in high school, trained intensively with Lauren Simpson in Cambridge, MA. Sofia is the Ad/Marketing Manager and Administrative Assistant at Contact Quarterly and teaches choreography, technique, and dance fitness classes regularly to children and adults.

EM PAPINEAU

Em Papineau is a dance artist, musician, athlete, and non-practicing barista who grew up dancing to music videos by pop stars and memorizing and inventing television ad jingles. After moving to Portland, ME at age 8, Em danced at Casco Bay Movers under the direction of Kate Marchessault and performed in works by Dante Brown, Shakia Johnson, Meredith Lyons, and Allie James through Portland Youth Dance. Em went on to attend Smith College and has performed in works by David Dorfman, Chris Aiken, Doug Varone, Xan Burley + Alex Springer, Jenna Riegel, Toni Craige, Nikki Lee, and Dante Brown through the Five College Dance Department, in addition to being a recipient of the Virginia J. Wagner Scholarship.  Em's 2018 solo, With Pulp, has been presented at the Queerly Contemporary Festival at Manhattan's 14t Street Y, as well as Smith College. Em also has an ongoing collaborative practice with Sofia Engleman.
