BUILD A FLOOR PROJECT: Join the Dance!

Help us OPEN THE WORKROOM/THEATER@33HAWLEY
It’s the perfect time to build the future together!

The Northampton Community Arts Trust recently received its fourth matching grant from the Mass Cultural Council Cultural Facilities Fund! This matching grant of $100,000 will to help open The Workroom/Theater@33Hawley.

  • To open this 3,800 square foot creative space we must raise an additional $400,000 to cover HVAC, acoustic walls, electrics and subfloor construction.
  • A sprung floor for dancing is an additional $100,000.  Learn More and Donate to the Build a Floor Project in honor of Nancy Stark Smith.
  • Our goal is to raise a total of $600,000 to open this space.

Your support is important to us and to the community.
All donations are made through the Arts Trust.

This project is dedicated to raising funds and overseeing construction of a resilient floor with a surface suitable for dancing and tough enough for multi-arts use. Housed within the new arts complex, 33 Hawley, in Northampton, MA, the space will host creative work locally and globally.

  • The floor project honors dance artist Nancy Stark Smith, founding co-editor of Contact Quarterly, creator of the Global Underscore, pioneer and champion of contact improvisation and committed supporter of dance in this community.

  • The 3800 square foot Workroom/Theater at 33 Hawley Street will soon be under construction for a First Phase Buildout and legal occupancy, thanks to a matching state grant. Within this arts facility owned and preserved by the Northampton Community Arts Trust, A.P.E. will continue their excellent programming and hosting of artist residencies in the Workroom/Theater to encourage original creative work in the heart of community.

  • We need $100,000 for the subfloor and a 60’ x 40’ removeable “marley” covering. If we are to keep dance vibrant in this community, at all ages and stages of development, as well as create national and international collaborations, host festivals, and encourage diversity in offerings, we must have a suitable floor. That’s the focus of this project.

  • This is a perfect time to build a floor. Arts facilities are mostly closed for classes and gatherings and several local dance spaces have permanently shut their doors. Support the future of dance, somatic practices, and global collaboration in our community now so we can celebrate together in 2021.
