COMMUNITY CURATION TEAM
We are THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE that SCDT has received funding through the MCC CIP project grant 2022!!! to continue with our mission for a COMMUNITY CURATION TEAM for Summer/Fall 2022! please contact us here for more info! [email protected].
The School for Contemporary Dance & Thought (SCDT) is looking for two Artist-Curators to develop diverse, inclusive, and dynamic programming for SCDT’s Spring 2022 through Fall 2022 Seasons. The curation team will be responsible for programming events and artists while adhering to SCDT’s mission. Our goal is to distribute the power of curation, gathering a team that represents an essential cross section of movement-based artists living and working in the Pioneer Valley and beyond. This is a NEW program! We are open to its shifts and growth as we discover new and better ways to engage with the community.
The team will be responsible for curating some of these major SCDT programs- covid depending.....
SCDT SEASONAL PROGRAMMING PLATFORMS
RIFF Talks: One event per season, four to six panelists and two moderators
AIR (Artists in Residence): One event per season, two to three artists per season
Guest Artist Performance Series: Two to three artists and events per season
Guest Artist Workshops, including Somatic Survival Strategies: Variable, subject to seasonal needs
The team will be divided into pairs for efficiency and accountability. A SCDT staff member and a SCDT board member will serve as 5th and 6th members of the team. Curation will vary program to program, consisting of both reviewing applications and offering artist nominations to the team.
Beginning in Spring 2022, each artist will serve on the team for one year (this includes Spring and Fall seasons) and will be paid a $300/season stipend. The team will start with programming the upcoming season (ex. A Fall start date would consist of Spring curation). In March 2022, the curation team will propose a finalized Fall 202s schedule to the SCDT staff who will serve as liaisons, facilitators, and implementers. This is a pilot program and hours/season have not been determined. However, we anticipate that each member of the team will dedicate approximately 15 hours/season.
In addition, the artist curators will be the panelists on this Spring 2022 season’s RIFF Talks. The panel will be focused on the topic of curation. Panelists will be invited to share their work in an associated performance. RIFF Talks_09 will take place in May 2022 and is intended to create transparency around SCDT’s curatorial choices.
Applications from the community will determine the next round of curation artists and voted on by the current curation team and the board of directors.
Curation team members can re-apply after two and a half years off the team.
This first group will be chosen from the community applications by SCDT’s Board of Directors, which includes Jen Polins, Vanessa Anspaugh, Jared Williams, Sakina Ibrahim, Mary Beth Brooker, Lesley Farlow, Wendy Woodson, Cynthia McLaughlin, and Michelle Kunitz. The Board will be tasked with creating a team with a diversity of experience who complement each other's goals for seasonal curation. Subsequent groups will be chosen by the board of directors and active curation team members.
Considerations for SCDT curation team member selection:
-Representation of a breadth of experiences and identities in relation to age, gender, race, ability, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and more.
-Individuals with a range of active creative practices and experience/interest in the movement arts
-At least two of the members must be local to the Pioneer Valley, though applications will be accepted from artists nationally and internationally.
-Prior relationship to SCDT, Western Mass, and/or Northeast region.

- Ideally, the SCDT Curation Team will curate on two different cycles (one beginning in the Fall and the other in the Spring each year). However, in order to initiate this rolling process, for this round, two members of the inaugural team will curate Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 seasons, with two members continuing on to curate an additional season. Two new members will join in the Fall of 2022 to curate Spring 2023. This rolling of terms will allow for deeper lines of communication between generations of team members, as well as more frequent opportunities for leadership turnover.
