FROM PETER:
A couple of years ago I was engaged in a creative project with 2 brilliant choreographers/performers- Lisa Gonzales and Pam Vail. At the outset of this project, we acknowledged nearly prohibitive restrictions/limitations. We had very little time to work together in a room/studio and we lived far away from one another. These particular limitations/boundaries feel very germane at this particularly unique time. Boundaries from one another over an unknown period of time. Rather than abandon the project, or the possibility of working together in some way, I devised an 'approach.' It is a variation of this particular approach I'm offering to creative artists hungry for some challenge. Artists of all mediums. |
I ask that you feel comfortable with movement. Comfortable making movement material. This can be with your hands or simply with your legs or eyes or some combinations thereof. The material impacted/informed by your particular location. Not so much the emotional impact but the physical impact- unless you're living now in a gymnasium or a deserted public pool you probably wont be able to run, or perform dunking jumps.
You should feel easy with 'directions' being sent by someone else. These 'directions' are to be seen through the objective lens of weight/direction rather than a subjective lens of feelings/moods.
I promise that feelings, a particular 'story' will emerge in an unexpected way.
To engage in this project, you must agree to:
- Have some way of filming your material, and being able to send film via internet to a partner.
- Be very flexible with 'expectations'... Expectations of what should happen, what you think should happen. Be willing to suspend definitions of composition - of what follows; one thing after another. Suspend definitions in construction of meaning. At least during this hibernation period.
I will be giving certain guidelines for the 'directions' and possibly for some 'final' shaping attentions.
- Promise to attend to the project's work every day for at least 30 min.
I anticipate a starting/ending date for this particular project. I can imagine some type of 'showing' at culmination. As is true of any situation more will be known based on your engagement, the quality of your attention.
