This evening of original dance performance explores bodies in motion, interwoven, in and out of sync, navigating the rhythms and possibilities of bodies together. It will include Spectral Sketchings choreographed by Daniel Bear Davis and Anna Maynard, cosensing, we are already silkworms, a relational piece choreographed on site, and Des-Echoes, choreographed in collaboration between Daniel Bear Davis and Caro Novella.

Two bodies, inextricably intertwined, struggle, embrace, disown, and reunite in a dance of negotiated power and fleeting identity. We, multiplicities, in contradiction, choose and cast away our various parts to shape ourselves to our imagination of our self. How do we know the “other” within? To be fixed, we are torn apart, conjoined, dis/membered, and gathered again in forms to re/member. Des-Echoes is a complication of the Spanish, "desechos" - trash. rubbish.
The constantly surprising stream of new bodies, formed from conventional objects, brings us into a morphing reality calling into question clear lines of self and other. We, multiplicities, in contradiction, choosing and casting away our various parts to shape ourselves to our imagination of our self. To be fixed, we are torn apart, conjoined, dis/membered, and gathered again in forms to re/member.

Spectral Sketchings

Spectral Sketchings is part of a series of studies exploring polyrhythms in the body and how physio-emotional states transform through nuanced shifts in scale and emphasis. This iteration opens into an exploration of rhythmic and tonal transformation - inviting into our bodies traces and textures of other times, peoples, and places. Bodies in indeterminate rhythm build reaction and resilience through the tensions of proximity and distance. We seek connection and autonomy - dancing alone/together in rhythm as complex and simple as the rain.
ARTISTS:
Daniel Bear Davis is an interdisciplinary performance maker and movement educator. He has taught Axis Syllabus, Contact Improvisation, and Composition internationally in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and throughout North America. Whether teaching physical skills or compositional practices, his intention is to foster tools for informed choice and increased possibility. His work has been presented at Performática (Mexico), The Imagining Bodies Symposium (Estonia), Dancing in Place Festival (Malaysia), the San Francisco International Arts Festial, SoWat Now Contemporary Performance Festival, and Looking Left Festival (California), and at the SEEDS Festival and E|MERGE Residency (Massachusetts). He has had worked with veterans and non-veterans in collaboration with EchoTheaterSuitcase project, and in San Quentin Prison with The Artistic Ensemble. His most recent group work explored intersections between the experiences of his students at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and the experiences of oppression expressed in interviews he conducted with Palestinians in the West Bank. He has been blessed with opportunities to perform with Guillermo Gomez Peña, Nita Little, Nancy Stark Smith, Live Art Installations, Felix Ruckert, Kira Kirsch, Avy K Productions, Scott Wells, and many other inspiring body/minds. www.danielbeardavis.com
Caro Novella is a Catalan artist-scholar-activist working at the intersection of dance, improvisation, installation, visual poetry, and text. She is a PhD candidate in Performance Studies at University of California, Davis. In 2011, she founded the internationally awarded performance project oncogrrrls -working around health issues centering on cancer and trans-feminism and has presented work in independent venues, museums and queer festivals internationally. Caro’s current projects involve scoring dances with cows in collaboration with Kevin O'Connor, and a movement inquiry on the afterlife's of silk-worms. She has collaborated and performed with Guillermo Gomez Peña and La Pocha Nostra, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Liz Lerman, Dani D’Emilia, Post-Op, and many other mentors and friends.
Anna M. Maynard is a recent graduate of the Smith College MFA. She is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in Portraiture through the varying mediums of Photography, Dance, Improvised Performance, and Choreography. With training in Classical Ballet, she now is an improvisational dancer. She has studied under teachers Amanda K. Miller, Chris Aiken, Angie Hauser, Nancy-Stark Smith, and Ishmael Houston Jones. In both photography and performance art, Anna creates work that probes the dynamics of interpersonal relations in dialogue with the world. In photography, she documents and highlights independent artists by exposing the intimacies and celebrations of their creative practices. In performance art, she reveals the complexities of the human heart through moving images that invite physical and imagined journeys through time, sensation and memory.
